OVERVIEW

Term and compensation

  • $26,413 per year (subject to increase in line with the Consumer Price Index for the upcoming fiscal year as required by the CSU’s board fees & expenses policy)
  • June 1, 2023 to until May 31, 2024

Eligibility

  • Must have been registered in at least one credit course at Capilano University, and have paid student society fees, during the current or previous semester
  • May only run for one position at a time

Duties on the board of directors

  • Attend bi-weekly meetings of the Capilano Students’ Union board of directors
  • Be an active member of at least one committee (they usually meet bi-weekly)
  • Make decisions, as a board, in the best interests of the organization and all students

Duties on the executive committee 

  • Attend executive committee meetings (they usually meet bi-weekly)
  • Lead the development of the CSU’s strategic plan
  • Look for ways to engage and consult with students
  • Serve in the role for at least 20 hours a week

Duties of the president 

  • Chair meetings of the executive committee
  • Be a spokesperson for the CSU on general issues
  • Initiate and coordinate strategic planning activities, board orientations, and development opportunities
  • Supervise the CSU executive director on a day-to-day basis

Duties of the vice-president equity & sustainability (individual)

  • Provide support for the CSU’s equity-seeking collectives
  • Promote and create programming for the queer and women’s resource centres
  • Work with the university to ensure support for survivors of sexual violence
  • Organize campaigns on social justice and environmental issues
  • Lead the development and execution of the CSU’s mental health strategy
  • Ensure that board colleagues receive anti-oppression training
  • Serve on the CSU’s collectives committee

Duties of the vice-president external (individual)

  • Represent the CSU to provincial and national student organizations
  • Meet regularly with federal, provincial, and municipal decision-makers
  • Organize the CSU’s participation in national and provincial advocacy campaigns
  • Lead U-Pass BC negotiations between the CSU and TransLink
  • Serve on the CSU’s campaigns and advocacy committee

Duties of the vice-president finance & services (individual)

  • Oversee the organization’s finances, including budgeting and investments
  • Promote and develop the CSU’s student spaces
  • Help the executive director to build healthy HR systems and labour relations
  • Work with the executive director to ensure that the CSU’s legal obligations are met
  • Serve on the CSU’s finance and audit committee
  • Serve on the CSU’s student engagement committee

Duties of the vice-president student affairs (individual)

  • Promote student engagement through developing and overseeing programs and events that support students’ social, recreational, academic, and wellness needs
  • Liaise with campus representatives, and faculty representatives
  • Represent the CSU to the university senate and other academic decision-making bodies of the university
  • Serve on the CSU’s student engagement committee

* The Sunshine Coast campus representative position is presently vacant or held by an interim appointee. The successful candidates will have the option of taking the position early.

  • Candidates must be declared in the faculty they seek to represent

Duties on the board of directors (all faculty, campus, and at-large representatives)

  • Attend bi-weekly meetings of the Capilano Students’ Union board of directors
  • Be an active member of at least one committee (they usually meet bi-weekly)
  • Make decisions, as a board, in the best interests of the organization

Duties as at-large representatives

  • Be responsible for keeping the Board informed of the perspectives and concerns of students
  • Perform such other duties as assigned by the board of directors

Duties as faculty and campus representatives

  • Represent the perspective of their faculty or campus to the CSU and the university
  • Organize meetings with senior administrators and faculty at least once per semester
  • Act as an ambassador for the CSU to the wider student body
  • Occasionally assist in additional CSU activities and campaigns

  • Candidates for collective liaison positions must self-identify as a member of the constituent group they seek to represent

Duties on the board of directors (all collective liaisons & coordinators)

  • Attend bi-weekly meetings of the Capilano Students’ Union board of directors
  • Be an active member of at least one committee (they usually meet bi-weekly)
  • Make decisions, as a board, in the best interests of the organization

Duties as collective liaisons and coordinators

  • Represent the perspective of their collective to the CSU and the university
  • Organize social justice events (like Pride Week or Black History Month Cabaret)
  • Work with other collectives toward intersectional goals
  • Work with the VP equity & sustainability to organize awareness campaigns
  • Research and raise awareness of social issues
  • Support the executives in lobbying for policy changes on social issues
  • Organize collective meetings (at least twice per semester)

Eligibility

Must be enrolled in a program in the Faculty of Business and Professional Studies.

Duties

The CBPS president is responsible for the following:

  • overseeing activities of CBPS;
  • succession planning for CBPS;
  • enforcing CSU and CBPS policies and procedures to govern decision practices;
  • monitoring and ensuring the carrying out of the CBPS strategic plan;
  • monitoring and ensuring the carrying out of the CBPS marketing plan;
  • evaluating work performance of CBPS presidents’ committee members;
  • submitting budgets to CSU on behalf of CBPS and its associations;
  • coordinating and monitoring spending of CBPS budget;
  • reviewing CBPS monthly financial statements to ensure financial stability and transparency;
  • University and community relations
  • seeking appropriate avenues to invest CBPS funding;
  • chairing CBPS presidents’ committee meetings in the absence of the vice-president;
  • scheduling CBPS presidents’ committee meetings and preparing meeting agendas in the absence of the vice-president; and 
  • other duties as required.

Note: The elected candidate will have the option of shadowing the sitting president in the lead-up to the beginning of their term.

  • $550 per semester

Duties

The CBPS vice-president is responsible for the following:

  • providing support to the CBPS president (being their right-hand person);
  • being aware of all activities of CBPS;
  • supporting the succession planning for CBPS;
  • enforcing CSU and CBPS policies and procedures to govern decision practices;
  • supporting the implementation of the CBPS strategic plan;
  • supporting the implementation of the CBPS marketing plan;
  • providing feedback on work performance of presidents’ committee members 
  • supporting the budget process;
  • reviewing CBPS monthly financial statements to ensure financial stability and transparency;
  • chairing presidents’ committee meetings;
  • scheduling presidents’ committee meetings and preparing meeting agendas; and
  • other duties as required.

Duties

The association presidents are responsible for the following:

  • be the primary liaison for association members;
  • keep in close communication with the CBPS members on CBPS and association activities;
  • organize, implement, facilitate and report on events; 
  • seek ways to improve upon events;
  • seek opportunities for future events/partnership events;
  • keep the association’s “team” motivated, focused, and on the same page;
  • ensure the association’s “team” understands the association’s role in the CBPS strategic plan;
  • ensure the association’s “team” understands their responsibilities individually, as a “team”, and as an association;
  • provide updates with respect to CSU and CBPS policies and procedures, as required; 
  • manage case competitions (separately through Capilano University and its faculty advisor); and
  • other duties as required.
