5th Annual Women’s Memorial March
February 11 • 12:00pm - 1:00pm
The CSU welcomes the Capilano University community to join us as we gather and march to honour the lives of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women in Canada.
We will gather at the gravel lot between Bosa building and the community garden and the march will begin right at noon.
After a brief welcome and introduction, we will march together through campus, stopping at wicket signs along the way and asking for a volunteer to read the message on the wicket sign (the messages are excerpts from the Calls for Justice from Reclaiming Power and Place: The Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls).
We will end the march at the gathering space outside the Kéxwusm-áyakn student centre. We’ll briefly share the history of the march and why it’s important to raise awareness. We’ll invite participants to join in singing and drumming the Women’s Warrior Song. We’ll offer time for participants to share.
Once the sharing is complete, we’ll invite everyone to be brushed off with cedar (a traditional Coast Salish way of removing old/stagnant/negative energy).
Please wear red in solidarity. Please feel free to bring your drums and rattles.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The Women’s Memorial March is an annual event that started in 1992 in response to the murder of a woman in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. The march takes place on February 14 — Valentine’s Day — as a show of respect for the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women (MMIW) and a sign of love and compassion for all women in the Downtown Eastside. In 2022, the CSU hosted the first Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women mini march and gathering on campus. We are committed to continuing this important work on campus.
